School Building Projects School improvements (additional buildings, library development, sports fields, and playground equipment) can be added as ongoing projects, and are sometimes needed at our existing partner schools. If you choose, your donation to the school fund can be targeted to help with these needs. Please contacts us for a list of current projects.

Internships If you can't give financially but want to help COEEF fulfill its mission, and you live in or near Salt Lake City, we can always use help in our office, or in planning and executing one of our events. Students can even arrange to serve internships for college credit.
We also have opportunities for students to donate time at one of our partner schools in Ethiopia, and are in the process of official internships for credit with local colleges and universities.
Volunteer Opportunities Throughout the year, COEEF participates in several events to raise funding for program costs. If you would like to donate your time helping out at a fundraiser or even in the office to help with mailings and administrative work, please contact a COEEF representative.
Supplementary Education Fund Tutoring Many of our students live in conditions that make doing homework difficult, if not impossible (poor lighting, no desk or table to write on, etc…). Some COEEF students struggle academically and could do better if they received more one-on-one assistance from a tutor. After-school tutoring is our solution to these problems, and we even plan to use some of our most gifted graduate students as tutors, which sets them up as role models for the younger girls, while providing them with some income.
To supplement a COEEF student’s educational growth, COEEF feels it Is necessary to provide students with additional training that will better enable students to grow up healthy and happy. You can donate to help provide in-service training on current educational topics for all staff members and students at our partner schools. Topics include basic educational topics, feminine hygiene, AIDS instruction, basic health tutoring and others.
Medical Fund The focus of our mission is always education. However, it if a medical situation arises, and illness prevents a student from deriving the full benefit of her educational opportunity, COEEF wants to make sure such situations are addressed.
Most needed care can be obtained in Ethiopia, and simple donations towards the medical fund help pay for basic doctor and specialist visits along with any medications necessary to make the student healthy. In rare situations, COEEF is notified of a health issue late in time or if it has been a problem since birth. We are able to outsource to doctors in other countries to help with these problems if we have the proper funding.
For example, in 2002 we brought Nuritu Dima to the United States for ear surgery to prevent permanent hearing loss. The procedure was successful and Nuritu is healthy and hearing well.
Another good example is Firtuna Birush, who had an extremely deformed foot that had been run over by a taxi earlier in life. In order for her to get married and lead a normal life, her foot needed to be fixed. After two trips to America for surgery, Firtuna’s foot is back to normal and is now able to play with the other children in her school.
College Fund COEEF’s commitment to students doesn’t end when they finish secondary school. In Ethiopia, if a student passes the 10th grade national exam, she has the opportunity to attend a specialized technology college. If she continues and completes the 12th grade national exam, she becomes eligible to attend a university in Ethiopia through the government cost-sharing program (similar to America's financial aid loan program). Through the cost-sharing program, basic educational needs and expenses are provided for and the students can pay this back once graduated.
The portion of funding that isn't provided by the cost-sharing program to the student is personal and material assistance. For the same donation as a personal sponsorship, $225/year or $20/month, you can provide the additional living assistance (hygienic items, clothing and other personal needs) necessary for a student to be successful and focus on her studies throughout the year.
In partnership with the YWCA of Ethiopia, COEEF is able to extend support like this through generous sponsors like you at the Addis Ababa University and Awassa University. They require each student to open a bank account and teach financial management, something they would not otherwise learn as most individuals in Ethiopia do not have bank accounts. They also teach the students about the reality of issues women face and how to react and respond to a potential harmful situation. Women's issues training will be given at a younger age, and reinforced heavily during college, as the girls will be out on their own at this point.
A donation to this fund ensures that students have a an opportunity to help them succeed in their post-graduation goals. To set up a scholarship in your name, please contact a COEEF representative.
Mesgana Dance Tour Fund The Mesgana Dancers represent hundreds of students in the COEEF program. As an international educational opportunity for select students with high merit and dance ability, we select a group of dancers to serve as patriots for their country and help spread awareness of the need for girl’s education in Ethiopia by performing cultural dance and song to audiences all over the world.
It is by generous donations that we are able to bring the dancers to perform in America and other neighboring countries. To help keep the dance program fully functional, your support is needed.

Sponsor Trips to Ethiopia
One of the best ways to get heavily involved in COEEF programs and projects is to take a trip to Ethiopia with COEEF representatives. Each sponsor trip enables sponsors to become more involved in their sponsor student's life and school, and to get involved in the country with opportunities COEEF is working on. Follow the link for information on Current Sponsor Trips and Former Sponsor Trips.
